“Most people are other people: their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passion a quotation.” – Oscar Wilde.
In order to be oneself, one has to take risks and accept that one is not perfect but to be courageous enough to say what one really thinks.
Lacking spontaneity, originality or individuality is the worse flaw for one to have. Role models are just that, and they are not necessarily someone to imitate to the letter, an image to clone or a mind to reproduce.
“To be natural is such a difficult pose to keep up” – Oscar Wilde.
Being different is considered wrong, as people are meant to follow societies’ expectations and norms, viewed as acceptable/ normal behaviour. It is believed that fulfilling society’s expectation is much easier, and life more successful and profitable. It is true that people who speak up their minds find a strong opposition from society, but at least they know who they are and are able to think by themselves.
Diversity, having an opinion, a style, a way of thinking and a defined character and personality is fantastic and should be encouraged in order to have a developing society. Evolution and progress are results of original ideas.
“Be a first rate version of yourself , not a second rate version of someone else.” – Judy Garland.
Individuality offers a sense of freedom: committing mistakes and learning from them, learning from different kind of experiences, from ideals and principles. That sense of freedom would definitely not be achieved by jumping on the bandwagon. The most remembered and respected people are the ones who were able to give new ideas, concepts and views of the world.
Following the crowd is OK for some people, but not for the ones who want to be respected and listened as an individual and not a social brand. Leave your masks, follow your ideals instead of a crowd, and defend your point of view as a reasonable person and you will learn so many things about others and yourself.
“It’s never too late to be who you might have been”. George Eliot
